"For joyful scenes, racing, stampedes, crowds, etc." reads the subtitle of this Allegro by Edward Falck (1874-1922). Joyful? Granted, the first part is indeed a merry gallop through clear C major. But then comes the second part—and at its peak, the tritone, the diabolus in musica (the devil in music). And after that, the horses even break out of their trot. Ultimately, however, the drama reaches a happy conclusion and returns to cheerful C major: a little triplet motif smiles back at us—a musical smiley face as a final touch.
