"F. B. Haviland's Moving Picture Pianist's Album, containing an assortment of melodies adapted to every class and style of pictures and dumb acts, brilliantly yet simply arranged for piano by Eugene Platzman" is a historical silent-film music folio published by the F. B. Haviland Publishing Co., a prominent American music publishing company based in New York City that, during the "Tin Pan Alley" era, published popular songs, marches, and waltzes, and was known for its so-called "coon songs" as well as "tearjerkers".
With the publication of one of the first "photoplay" albums in 1911, the publisher sought to meet the burgeoning demand for musical compositions—or incidental music—specifically designed or collected for silent film (the very first collection of silent film music had been self-published by Gregg A. Frelinger in 1909).
Note: The publication year of 1904 cited by the Library of Congress is likely the result of an oversight: while the first copyright notice in Haviland’s album (p. 2) does indeed read "Copyright 1904," this almost certainly refers to the composition by George H. Bell printed on that page. All subsequent notices on the following pages read "Copyright 1911." [1]
Haviland's Moving Picture Pianist's Album contains a collection of 50 mostly simple piano arrangements—based on classical music, opera, and traditional or popular melodies—tailored to the wide variety of moods, scenes, and narrative sequences or action types ("every class and style of pictures and dumb acts") found in silent-film cinemas.
